Frequently asked questions
What is an OBD2 trouble code?
It is a five-character code stored by the car’s control unit when it detects a fault. The first letter shows the system (P powertrain, B body, C chassis, U network) and the digits describe the type of problem.
How do I read a trouble code from my car?
Plug an OBD2 scanner into the diagnostic port (usually under the steering wheel), switch the ignition on and read the stored codes. Then enter the code in the search on this page.
Can I drive with the Check Engine light on?
It depends on the code. For every code we show a risk rating: green means you can drive carefully to a workshop, red is a reason to stop. A flashing light always needs a quick reaction.
Are trouble codes the same for every brand?
Generic codes (e.g. P0xxx) are shared by all brands. Manufacturer codes (e.g. P1xxx) can mean something different for each brand, so for them we show the car brand.
